Under the guidance of Professor Dr. Mounir Al-Aroud, President of Al-Furat University, the College of Petrochemical Engineering, represented by Dr. Engineer Nova Juma, Dean of the College, and in coordination with the Director General of the General Corporation for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Deir ez-Zor, organized a scientific trip for the fifth-year students of the Department of Petrochemical Industries Engineering to the Al-Furat Station for managing the water of the Euphrates River with the aim of converting it into potable water, with the aim of enhancing the practical aspect of students and linking academic knowledge to field application.

The students, with the help of the engineers in charge of the station’s work, were briefed on the various treatment stages, starting from the point of drawing water from the river and its initial treatment with chlorine, all the way to the chemical treatment using alum (aluminum sulphate) in the mixing basins and then clarification, followed by the physical treatment using sand filters to reduce the turbidity to the minimum possible, then the physicochemical treatment by adsorption on coal to remove the odor and color, and finally the final sterilization with chlorine in the main collection tanks from which the treated water is drawn. Compliance with Syrian standard specifications for drinking water to the supply lines that supply the city with drinking water.
The tour included a detailed explanation of the various treatment techniques applied at the plant, operation and maintenance mechanisms, and an introduction to the physical, chemical, organic and bacterial analyzes conducted on treated water to verify its quality and the equipment used in the analysis. This contributed to developing the students’ scientific and practical experiences.
